Village of Buckhorn

The village of Buckhorn is located on Kentucky Route 28 about 30 minutes from Booneville to the west and 45 minutes from Hazard, Buckhorn’s county seat, to the east. Jackson, KY, lies 40 minutes north of Buckhorn. Visitors approaching from the south are advised to take Route 30 to Booneville before turning east on Route 28. Route 2022, which runs south from Buckhorn to  Saul, is a narrow, twisting, up-and-down road that is not recommended for through traffic.

While it is possible to drive all the way through Buckhorn without encountering a traffic signal or a stop sign, this small village has numerous places worth visiting.

Buckhorn Dam, Buckhorn Lake, and Tailwater Campground

The Buckhorn dam, lake, and campground are located on Route 1387, which begins at the intersection of Routes 28 and 2022 in Buckhorn and ends in the water of Buckhorn Lake a mile away. The 1020-foot long dam rises 162 feet above the original stream bed and was constructed under the direction of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE or “Corps”), Louisville District. Ground was broken for the dam on September 29, 1956 and the dam was dedicated September 10, 1960. The creation of Buckhorn Lake covered portions of highway 28 and displaced the small community of Bowlingtown along with many other homes and cemeteries.
